How to Make Phone Calls From Inside Gmail

Google VoiceIf you use Gmail, you can move to having only one Web page and one address book that combines e-mail, IM-style chat, and phone.

Internet-based phone service is nothing new. Skype, which lets Americans talk to each other for free and charges a couple of pennies per minute for long distance, began seven years ago. But Wednesday, Google has begun rolling out Internet phone service built into the interface of its Gmail service.
Google promotes it as a fallback feature for Gmail’s video chat system, in case the other party isn’t sitting in front of a computer waiting to have a video chat with you. But it’s not just for your video chat partners, if you even have any. It’s for anytime a phone call is the best way to communicate with someone else. Some people who would never accept a video chat request might take a phone call instead.
Here’s how it works: A new button on Gmail’s interface, Call Phones, launches a small window with a telephone-style keypad. There’s also a box into which you can type people’s names, to see if their phone number is in your Gmail address book. To use the phone feature, you first need to install a plug-in for your browser from Google. It works with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google’s own Chrome browser and Apple’s Safari on Macs.
Google will use your computer’s built-in microphone and speakers, or a USB headset, to pick up your voice and to play the other party’s voice. Once you’ve installed the plug-in and configured your computer to use the right audio gear, making the calls is as easy as dialing an old Princess phone.I’m glad Google didn’t clutter the keypad with all sorts of extra buttons and distractions.
The person you’re calling will see on their phone the caller ID 760-705-8888, which Google uses for all outbound calls unless you’re also using their Google Voice service and have a Google Voice number.
Google Voice gives you a Google-assigned number so Google can handle your incoming calls and voicemail. That may be an additional complexity you don’t want. You also need to sign up with Google Voice if you want to receive calls within Gmail. You’l need to give out your Google Voice number to friends and colleagues if you want them to call you through Gmail.
Like Skype, Google’s prices are hard to beat. Calls within the United States and Canada are free. Calls to other countries average around two cents a minute. Google has posted its rates for each country. ($77 cents a minute for calls to North Korea.)
Sure, you could reach for your cellphone instead of dialing your browser. But my extensive use of Skype and smartphones has shown that most of the time an Internet phone call has better voice quality. People don’t ask me to repeat myself. There are sometimes annoying delays of up to four seconds between the time someone says something at one end and the time it pops out at the other end. These delays come from the Internet itself, which will make them hard for even Google to fix. And every now and then, Internet calls get dropped just like a cellphone.
What’s in it for you? If you already use Skype and Gmail, you can move to having only one Web page and one address book that combines e-mail, IM-style chat, and phone. It would be even more useful if Google will add a button in Gmail that appears alongside every message: “Call Joe Smith now.” After all, it should be easy for Google, which already scans the text of your inbound messages to deliver better-targeted ads, to fish Joe’s phone number out of his e-mail signature.

Google integrates phone calls into Gmail

Google is rolling out a new feature in Gmail that allows users to make free — or cheap — long-distance phone calls.

Voice in Gmail lets users with a microphone or headset ring a landline or cellphone.

Although the feature will be officially available only in the U.S. for now, a Google Canada spokeswoman says it may work for Canadians if their settings are set to English-US.

Not all users will have access to the feature until it's fully rolled out.

Google says calls to any phone in North America will be free until at least the end the year, while fees are charged for calls around the world.

For example, calls to the U.K. are priced at two cents per minute for dialing a landline or 18 cents for a cellphone.

Fans are tired at the Montreal Rogers Cup 2010

The Edition 2010 of the tennis Rogers Cup in Montreal will not be the tournament of the century. There seems to be a fatigue among Montreal fans to this sport and if all tickets are sold, the stands are rarely full and we do not notice many famous people in the stands.
The festive atmosphere of previous years is clearly not there, and even stands installed on the site looks more like a flea market rather than a tribute to tennis.
Fortunately, the house announcer at the Stadium is excellent, the best in town, Winston McQuade!
And then there's also the Belgian champion player Kim Clijsters who is favorite to win the tournament ... (It's her on the picture)
Hopefully she will make it to the final on Sunday! (She was defeated Friday afternoon...)

The White Dinner Montreal 2010...

The White Dinner of Montreal 2010 has been held August 19 at the little park in front of the Caisse de Depot - Quebecor - Power Corporation - Montreal Stock Exchange. A surprising secret location that brought together about 2,200 participants happy and festive!
"This small park is in a way "my" park (Bernard Bujold) and when I came back from tennis Rogers Cup, I was surprised to see it invaded by thousands of people dressed in white .... It was comical to see the area of finance give way to a giant dance party. "
Strangely too, everyone said to be at The Montreal White Party when in reality it is the Montreal White Dinner... Again this year the couples had to be "one man-one woman" and that rule does not appeal to certain groups including the gay community that organizes the real White Party in April every year.

Two owners and land developers have ventured into Oka with the intention to mark the trees they wanted to cut on a land that Indians claim. The Indians were there in large crowd with hoods and cries of war ... Fortunately, the Native American women avoided the killing of the two intruders in negotiating with the police who forced the land developers to leave.
Norfolk and its promoter Normand Ducharme bought the land in Oka, "after" that the Federal Government has decided to consider the claims of Natives People for the place.

Barnes Foundation

Established in 1922 in Merion, Pa., a Philadelphia suburb, the Barnes Foundation is known mainly for its art collection, one of the world's largest assemblages of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings. Founded by Albert C. Barnes, a physician who made his fortune in patent medicine, the Barnes also runs a school whose curriculum centers on art appreciation; a 12-acre arboretum where horticulture is taught; and Ker-Feal, an 18th-century farmhouse in Chester, Pa., where furniture and other decorative arts are on view.

The neo-classical art galleries are renowned for the breadth of the art, 181 Renoirs, 69 Cezannes, 46 Picassos and 59 Matisses, as well as works by Soutine, Rousseau, Modigliani, Monet, Degas, van Gogh, Seurat and Manet, and the highly individual way in which they are displayed.

Paintings often ascend the walls in twos and threes, often in unusual juxtapositions chosen by Barnes himself. Barnes stipulated in the foundation's charter and bylaws that the works must always be displayed just as he arranged them.

Arguing that it was strapped for cash, the Barnes petitioned a Montgomery County, Pa., court in 2002 for permission to amend the bylaws so that it could move the collection to a new site and attract more visitors and financing. The case caused a furor in the art world, with some arguing that the site's unique environment for art-viewing could never be matched elsewhere. Three charitable foundations meanwhile agreed to help the Barnes raise millions on the condition that a judge clear the way for a move to downtown Philadelphia. In 2004, a judge ruled that the Barnes could relocate. Although construction is years into the future, the foundation has chosen the husband-and-wife architecture team Tod Williams and Billie Tsien to design a new Barnes home on Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.

The next Prime Minister of Canada...

Today (August 2) is the birthday of Bob Rae. (Top photo)
It will be recalled that this former Prime Minister of Ontario had given way to Michael Ignatieff for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada and everything seems indicated that this choice was a mistake. According to polls, Ignatieff fails at endearing himself to Canadians and Stephen Harper seems to be firmly installed for at least another mandate. Many political observers are convinced that Bob Rae would be a better choice for reversing the Conservative government in Ottawa and some liberal activists are trying to convince him to take the place of Ignatieff that they would force him to resign before the next election. To be continued...
Happy Birthday Rae!
