Chicago : Michelin names 46 good-value restaurants

(Crain's) — Michelin's revered restaurant guide makes its Chicago debut next week. In advance of those star ratings, Michelin has separately identified 46 Chicago restaurants as outstanding values.

The Bib Gourmand rating goes to restaurants the Michelin guide believes “offers good cuisine at a reasonable value.” Diners can get two courses and either a glass of wine or dessert for $40, tax and gratuity not included.

The Bib Gourmand symbol was applied to the sidewalk in front of each eatery, Michelin said in a release.

“Top Chef” winner Stephanie Izard's Girl & The Goat as well as Bill Kim's Belly Shack and Urban Belly got Bib Gourmand nods, as did Lincoln Park's Raj Darbar.

The value ratings come a week before Michelin releases its first-ever Chicago guide. The coveted star ratings, from one to three, are scheduled to be released next week as the red-jacketed guide hits store shelves.

Michelin's inaugural guide has created a buzz in Chicago's dining community, even among chefs who are trying to guess where they'll rate in the guide. Grant Achatz's Alinea and Laurent Gras's L20 are considered contenders for two or three stars, but last week Mr. Gras took a leave of absence that could become permanent.

Disregarded attic vase sold for $69 million

A British couple once brought a family curio -- an ornate Chinese vase that they owned for decades -- onto the precursor of the "Antiques Roadshow" for a little bit of history about the heirloom.

The snooty curator of "Going For a Song" declared the 16-inch-tall porcelain vase nothing more than a "very clever reproduction."
Luckily, the couple, longtime residents of the working-class London suburb of Pinner, didn't listen to the "expert" some 40 years ago, and held onto the piece.
The vase went back to a bookshelf, and later to the dusty attic of their modest home.
The couple grew old, and eventually passed away. The vase was nearly forgotten.
Then this year, their surviving relatives, the 70-year-old sister of the husband and her adult two children, were cleaning out the attic.
They were hunting for family heirlooms and items to sell at a run-of-the-mill estate auction, like furniture or carpets.
"We were clearing her brother's house after he died, and I looked at the vase and said, 'Oh, that looks nice.' It had just sat on the bookcase doing absolutely nothing," David Reay, manager of the Bainbridges auction house, told the London Evening Standard.
"They told me it had been valued at just [$1,300] two months earlier. They also told me the owner had taken it on 'Going For a Song' on the BBC about 40 years ago. He was told it was a very clever reproduction."
Reay knew it was valuable, but he still had it sent to the Arts Club of London where it sat on a metal table in a busy kitchen in between public viewings.
Finally, experts evaluated the piece and estimated it could sell for over a million dollars, noting it was made around 1740 for the royal court of Qianlong, the fifth emperor of the Qing dynasty -- a period when Chinese porcelain-making had reached its zenith.
The two adult children, a brother and sister, believed it was "just an ornament" that had been in the family since the 1930s, and passed down from a relative who traveled internationally.
The auction house of Peter Bainbridge -- a tiny business with just three full-time employees -- went ahead with the auction on Thursday.
The vase had attracted worldwide attention, particularly from China's nascent but growing cadre of wealthy art collectors.
Bainbridge's modest auction house was packed.
"The room was crackling with excitement. The couple were down in the middle of the audience, but no one knew," said Bainbridge staffer Peggy Bates.
Then the bidding began.
Bainbridge, whose big gest sale to that point had been $160,000, kept his cool as bids pushed the price past $10 million, then $30 million, then $50 million, to finally close at $69.5 million after 30 minutes of in tense bidding.
"There was a si lence that wrapped it self around the sale as the figure grew slowly but surely up to the sky," Bainbridge said.
"I'm an auctioneer, so at that point, I'm just doing the professional job I'm paid to do. But once the hammer's down, you do take stock slightly, and think, Oh, wow, that's really rather a lot of money."
The couple had to run out of the room to catch their breath.
And Bainbridge himself had to pause to realize he'll collect a $13 million premium on top of the closing sale price.
Once Britain's value-added tax was tacked on, the final price was $85.9 million, won by an anonymous buyer in China who phoned in the bid.
The brother and sister were utterly stunned.
"She told me she wished it happened 30 years ago," Reay, the Bainbridge manager, said.
Bainbridge himself called it a "fairy tale" for an "utterly normal" family.
The couple, like the buyer, insisted on remaining anonymous.
Their sale was the most expensive piece of Chinese artwork ever. .
Little is known about the vase, but it was likely looted from a Peking imperial palace by British and French soldiers during the Second Opium War, some 150 years ago.
British troops were given free rein to loot Emperor Xianfeng's Summer Palace of Gold.
They then torched the place and marched away laden with tons of booty.
China's booming economy means new collectors are joining the market all the time, and wealthy buyers are keen to repatriate treasures from their heritage.

Members of the Falash Mura, Ethiopians who returned to Judaism after their ancestors converted to Christianity to escape persecution at the end of the 19th century, arrive at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv, Israel (File Photo)
The Israeli government has decided to allow 8,000 Ethiopians who claim Jewish descent to enter the country.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in remarks to his Cabinet Sunday, spoke of a "humanitarian crisis" and a "moral commitment" to help members of a group known as the Falash Mura. They are Ethiopians who say they were forced to convert to Christianity.
Mr. Netanyahu said the Falash Mura will be brought to Israel in stages over the next three years. They will then need to convert before being granted Israeli citizenship.
Some 100,000 Ethiopian Jews now live in Israel. They came to the country during the 1980s and 1990s under the Law of Return, which provides Israeli citizenship to all Jews.
Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.

It is the MPs that should discuss the good or ill-founded comments by Sylvain Lafrance.

A trip around Canada

The photographer Bertrand Lemeunier teamed with journalist Eric Clement OF La Presse and he published a photo book "O Canada". Both authors had previously published "French of Montreal" (La Presse). The new book recounts the Canadian tour of Lemeunier on his bike. A beautiful book whose image are of high quality. The photographer, however, has a major challenge to overcome because it has no publisher or distributor and he published his book himself. For this reason, the book is not available in major bookstores and it must be ordered directly from Lemeunier. Too bad because it is a book which would deserves to be in store!

The Montreal Mafioso Nicolo Rizzuto

Montreal Mafioso Nicolo Rizzuto's (86 years) died as a sort of War General in service. He was hit by a bullet Wednesday night in the kitchen of his residence and he died instantly. The sniper would have shouted his firearm from the small wooded area behind the house.
In a sense, Rizzuto wanted this kind of violent death and he died in battle.
For a Man of Honour like him, he would have been much worse to die old without attention. His end is worthy of a movie.

Fresh Wave of Attacks Target Christians in Baghdad

Iraq expert James Denselow of King's College London emphasizes Iraq's Christian community has been decimated since the 2003 U.S. invasion of the country.

People gather at the scene of a bomb attack in Baghdad, 10 Nov 2010
A series of bombings targeting Iraqi Christians left several people dead and dozens wounded, less than two weeks after a failed hostage-taking at a Baghdad church left dozens of casualties.

Fear and confusion gripped many Christians in the Iraqi capital after another series of attacks aimed at the Christian community.  Baghdad police reports spoke of at least 11 separate explosions in three mostly Christian areas of Baghdad.

Iraq expert James Denselow of King's College London emphasizes Iraq's Christian community has been decimated since the 2003 U.S. invasion of the country.

"There are estimates that some 60 percent of the million-strong population [of Christians] have either left the country or been killed," he said. "What has happened in the last month is a significant uptick in targeted violence against Christian communities in Iraq, and it is accompanied by messages from what remains of al-Qaida in Iraq that they are specifically targeting the Christian community. [Christians] are without militia protection, they are without political representation in what is anyway a rather grid-locked parliament, and thus they are incredibly vulnerable."

Denselow says he thinks the current spiral of violence against Iraqi Christians will increase their exodus from the country.

Iraqi satellite TV stations showed chunks of concrete from homes and buildings that were shattered by the blasts.  There were scenes of twisted metal, broken glass and bloodstained streets, as ambulances took victims to hospitals and survivors sifted through rubble.

There were also images of Christian families lingering amid the shattered walls and splintered furniture of their homes, unsure of what to do.  One teenage boy explains what he saw.

He says he was standing around a specific area when suddenly there was an explosion.  He adds a fire broke out after the blast, but that it was put out as people took cover.

More than 50 Christian church-goers died in a brutal siege of a Catholic church less than two weeks ago.  That event still has many Baghdad Christians trembling with fear and agonizing over what to do.  Iraqi Christian leaders appear divided, with some urging their followers to remain in the country and others recommending they leave.

Many observers say that the eight-month political power vacuum in the country has added to the mounting violence against Christians and others and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki lashed out at his political opponents, signaling a political deal is still no closer.

He says that real partners in governing must shoulder responsibility incumbent on them, and not become conduits for terrorists, Baathists and other gangs out to wreak havoc and destruction.

U.S. State Department Spokesman P. J. Crowley indicated Tuesday the United States has not had any "specific requests for asylum," by Iraqi Christians in the aftermath of recent violence.  But he added 53,000 Iraqi refugees have settled in America since 2007 and that a program is in place to help resettle more if the need arises.

Video : Rihanna - Te Amo

Songwriters: Eriksen, Mikkel; Fauntleroy, James; Fenty, Robyn; Hermansen, Tor;

"Te amo, te amo," she says to me
I hear the pain in her voice
Then we danced underneath the candelabra, she takes the lead
That's when I saw it in her eyes, it's over

Then she said "te amo"
Then she put her hand around my waist
I told her no, she cried "te amo"
I told her I'm not gonna run away, but let me go

My soul is awry, without asking why
I said, "te amo, wish somebody'd tell me what she said"
Don't it mean "I love you"?
Think it means "I love you"
Don't it mean "I love you"?

Te amo, te amo, she's scared to breathe
I hold her hand, I got no choice
Pulled me out on the beach, danced in the water, I start to leave
She's begging me and asking why it's over

Then she said "te amo"
Then she put her hand around my waist
I told her no, she cried "te amo"
I told her I'm not gonna run away, but let me go

My soul is awry, without asking why
I said, "te amo, wish somebody'd tell me what she said"
Don't it mean "I love you"?
Think it means "I love you"
Don't it mean "I love you"?

Listen we can dance, but you gotta watch your hands
Watch me all night, I'm movin' to the light because I understand
That we all need love and I'm not afraid
I feel the love, but I don't feel that way

Then she said "te amo"
Then she put her hand around my waist
I told her no, she cried "te amo"
I told her I'm not gonna run away, but let me go

My soul is awry, without asking why
I said, "te amo, wish somebody'd tell me what she said"
Don't it mean "I love you"?
