Star Press

One thing I find really annoying in my line of work:

Like it or not, most people now have home computers, smartphones, and access to the internet pretty much everywhere they go. (And if you're going to Outer Mongolia or some other place where you don't have it, leave an out of office message that says so.)

There is absolutely NO reason why a member of the press should not be able to contact someone immediately in response to a press release! NONE! Don't be a stooge! Read on:::

One time I received a press release with FIVE different phone numbers on them and NOT ONE SINGLE answer! Either ring-ring-ring-ring or a non-dated voicemail. (I can't tell you how many times people will call me back DAYS LATER after I have left a message!)

If you can't be right at the phone or have someone who will be, and you expect a successful press event to happen, for goddsakes PLEASE record a special message, something like: "Hi it's Phil on Tuesday, November 10, if you're calling about the press release leave your contact info and I will call you right back." THAT lets the person calling know that they have a better than 50% chance of speaking with a live person before DEADLINE... or leave an alternate, a cell number, an email address... if you want coverage!

I took a chance one time and went to a news conference without being able to verify the information that was presented in the press release. Guess who was the ONLY reporter at the event? ME! The other radio and TV stations passed because there were other events (maybe not as important) happening where they WERE able to make contact with a living soul!

In this modern "I want it NOW" world, reporter's deadlines have shrunk like crazy! If you email me your press release tonight, and I read it at 0800 tomorrow, you better have SOMEBODY manning the phones 0900 or before and you better be able to produce people I can interview by 1000! I'm sorry, but that's the way it is today!

Now, if you have a place where you can upload AUDIO and/or VIDEO tracks, you are way ahead of the game and making it eaasier for the press to cover your event! "Oh, you couldn't make it out to hear so-and-so speak about the issue? We have a soundbite on our website and a video of the presser on YouTube." You will be surprised how well that scenario plays out!

12 Multicultural Broadcasters Expand Mobile Distribution on AudioNow

I'm a huge fan of AudioNow - the service serves me very well on my HiPhone: not only can the phone receive over-the-air FM radio broadcasts (no need to download an app or spend $ on bandwidth), but I can dial and listen to, for example, Michael Savage (321-549-0002) on nights when the local outlet decides to run a sports event.

Twelve new broadcasters have partnered with AudioNow to provide mobile streaming to any mobile device for their specialized content in the U.S. The newest broadcasters to announce mobile distribution agreements with AudioNow are Radio RCH 2000, based in Flordia City, FL, La Voix du Vrai Bonheur of RDH Ministries out of West Orange, New Jersey, Radio Ambiance Spirituelle also from West Orange, New Jersey, Haiti Philadelphia, based in Philadelphia, PA, Radio Optimum Inter from Brooklyn, New York, Radio Performance FM out of Immokalee, FL, Voix de la Prophetie out of Riviera Beach, FL, Psalm 27 based in Miami, FL, Okwahuman from Norcross, GA, Voice of Gedeh out of Darby, PA, Trinity Radio USA out of Columbia, MD, and Radio Omega SCA based out of Brooklyn, New York.

“Listeners can now access their favorite content on any mobile device which we have seen builds tremendous loyalty for broadcasters,” says Jen Friesen, AudioNow’s Director of Public Affairs. “The AudioNow service is particularly well-suited for mobile listeners that rely on standard mobile phones and can’t access their content through standard radio or streaming devices.”

AudioNowTM is the leading provider of mobile phone radio distribution in North America. It uses proprietary, “HD” voice architecture, and patent-pending “single-stream” technology that allows any fixed or mobile phone to access live and pre-recorded audio programming without any downloads across all mobile platforms while lowering bandwidth costs for broadcasters.

With just 17 months to go before the US Presidential election, none of the emerging Republican candidates impress me more than Michele Bachmann. I kinda like "the businessman" Herman Cain. Everybody else favors Mitt Romney, but I can't imagine him defeating Barack Obama. And we still aren't exactly sure what Sarah Palin will do. Out with you, damned Newt! The great thing about a democracy is that you can have a pack of candidates like this to pick and choose from. We just have to wait and see where it all goes.

Of interest to upstate NY readers ::: It was just a year ago that John Mulrooney joined Cumulus rocker WPDH (101.5 Poughkeepsie) as part of the "Coop & Mulrooney Show," but now the station says "the time is right to move on from having a four-person show," leaving Mark Cooper and sidekicks Kricket and Deuce in place - and Mulrooney as the odd man out. Mulrooney was probably better known to Albany listeners for his long stint as part of the "Wolf and Mulrooney" morning show on PYX-106. Also via fybush, of interest to NYC readers: He's best known for his big hit "Someday, Someway," but now Marshall Crenshaw is trying his hand at radio. Crenshaw will join the staff of WFUV (90.7) beginning next Saturday for a one-hour weekly show called "The Bottomless Pit," which will air at 10 PM, following Vin Scelsa's venerable "Idiot's Delight."

#WeinerGate - The Final Call: Erections have Consequences

Rep. Anthony Weiner in "the ultimate roast" ::: A NY Post poll shows many favor Weiner resigning his political position. Heaven knows how that will affect his marriage. I'm still very shocked that someone of his stature would stoop this low, fully knowing the kind of trouble it made for people like Tiger Woods...

It didn't take long for that sassy Breitbart image of Weiner's Wanger to "escape" into the wild. Breitbart didn't release it himself: he let a couple of radio hosts see it, and they took a picture of its picture and the rest is history!

Digging Up DEAD AID

Coincidences are funny things - I had taken the PC online while cleaning my desk out Friday. Just about the same moment I came across my Dambisa Moyo file and was looking thru the papers pictured above, this blog posting appeared in my RSS reader.

It began: This morning I accidentally stumbled on this old blog post from 2009, about Dambisa Moyo's book, Dead Aid, and I thought it was worth resurrecting its rotting corpse and taking another look.

It was a bit of a ranty rambly blog post at the time, and I also forgot to follow up one of the comments, which linked to this radio interview with Moyo, which I've now listened to.

Night of the Living Dead Aid

Phil aka "The Evil Flea" continued on... making valid points along the way. I remember well my interview with Ms. Moyo. The raw tape runs for about an hour. We not only chatted about "Dead Aid" - we touched on her next book and about taking tea among other pleasantries. One thing I didn't ask Ms. Moyo was about her marital status. I didn't think of it at that time, and didn't think it was important... but over the last year or so I see a lot of traffic from Bing and Google where websurfers have keyed in the phrase "Dambisa Moyo husband."

I enjoyed speaking with her and reading her work: she's quite intelligent and understands the global economy and its innermost workings.

A book can be compared to a hit record. The artist (writer) is driven by the publishing house to go forth and support it (book tours, appearances, interviews, etc.), which is exactly what brought Ms. Moyo and myself together in conversation way back when...

Philippines: Netizens follow Telecom merger deal issue

Read this post.
Netizens in the Philippines are closely following the developments of a merger deal between two of the country’s largest telecommunications companies. Some are worried that the merger would be bad for consumers. Here's the gist: The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) announced last March that it has bought off the Digital Telecommunications with P74.1 billion (US$1.7 billion).

If approved by government regulators, there would be two mobile carriers in the country left with PLDT’s Smart, Talk N’Text, Red Mobile and Digitel’s Sun controlling 70 percent of the market and Globe Telecom and TM controlling the remaining 30 percent.

Glee, Gaga, Minaj, Aguilera and Lara Logan

Two current pop culture icons have the savviest teams of public relations people behind them.

Lady GaGa and Nicki Minaj.

You may think Ms. Minaj [#6] is relatively new on the scene. She's been with us for awhile, like one of those programs that runs silently in the background on your computer. When enough foundations and associations were made, her PR team sprang into action in a "Minaj Barrage" that truly catapulted her to stardom within and beyond the hip hop community.

Lady GaGa emerged as a cheap imitation Madonna wannabee. I heard from people who have an in with the Lady's PR folk. They actually read my post about Gags NOT being the new Madonna. That prompted a little thinking outside the box... they decided to exploit that very idea, which blossomed at the Grammies. This is a remarkably rare occurrence where a star gives her blessing to a wannabee. And that lifts the "wannabee curse" immediately!

Recent news that GLEE charted a whole bunch of tunes and supposedly "beat Elvis" is straight-out BS. The music industry is a ghost of what it once was, and this GLEE "news" is utter nonsense.

I posted this several years ago:

The New Information Age (and co-incidentally, the beginning of the total collapse of the music industry in America) began around 1999. The critical event was the making of a star, Christina Aguilera, by use of the Internet.

Soon, the downloading of pirated music CDs (and a bit later on, Movies) changed the face of so-called "Top 40" music and the radio FOREVER: When executives at RCA Records were plotting ways to create buzz around teen pop singer Christina Aguilera's debut album, they knew the Internet would play a crucial role.

The trick was marketing Ms. Aguilera without making teens feel they were actually being marketed to. On a 1-10 scale, Internet marketer Ken Krasner says, teens "have their B.S. detectors on 11." So RCA hired a team of young cybersurfers to swarm the Web and start chatting about the 18-year-old Ms. Aguilera on popular teenInternet sites such as www.alloy.com, www.bolt.com and www.gurl.com. They posted information casually -- sometimes sounding like fans, sometimes like official spokesmen -- but always making sure not to come off as lame adults trying to be cool or marketers pitching a product. It worked.

Thanks in large part to the advance buzz online, the album "Christina Aguilera" was No. 1 on the charts when it debuted in late August. Doesn't sound like much of a big deal, does it? But that's the day "Top 40" died. Today's so-called "Top 40" does not accurately reflect what music the general public is listening to.

WHAT? YOU THINK I'M KIDDING? Think again!

Moral of the story:

Once upon a time, Christine Aguilera had a crack team of PR people behind her... too bad she must have lost them, or they got too fat and happy.

Last week this humble weblog enjoyed sky-high traffic thanks to a 2008 post about Lara Logan.

The search terms that brought visitors in by the droves were "Lara logan swimsuit pics" "lara logan nude" "lara logan sex" --- you get the idea!

In August 2005 my blog featured multiple posts about Albany area teacher Beth Geisel, a hot blonde who admitted having sex with boys at the military high school where she was employed. A single post about Geisel brought 20-thousand visitors to my over a 9-hour time period! Such was, and is, netizen's interest in sex.

Sonia Faleiro ::: How Technology has Transformed the Sex Trade

I was browsing CBS2's interactive site and a story about the dreaded skin disease MRSA caught my eye. Ok, we know about MRSA, but we did we know it could do THIS: "Doctors said Mauriello’s secondary infection, Lemierre’s, manifested as a septic clot in his jugular vein and was likely caused by the MRSA." YIKES!

The story reminds me of what happened to model Mariana Bridi, dead for two years now...

I guess Philadelphia is becoming more and more like Detroit: not safe, not even in broad daylight!

Since I was knee-high to a puppy I've been on the AOL SUCKS bandwagon. This Has Happened Before: Comparing the AOLington Post to AOL Time Warner. (NY Mag outlines the paralells of the two deals) ...The Internet company's name is still a proxy for expensive mergers gone wrong following the unraveling of its $350 billion merger with Time Warner Inc in 2000. Once worth $163 billion, today AOL has a market capitalization of around $2.3 billion. Shares fell 3.4 percent to close at $21.19 on Monday.

AOL's management was eager to point out that there would be financial benefits from buying Huffington Post.

"One plus one will equal 11," AOL Chief Executive Tim Armstrong said in an interview with The New York Times. Errrr... okay...

From Politico ::: “The AOL-HuffPost deal demonstrates how overwhelmingly popular the progressive political perspective is online,” said Jane Hamsher, publisher of the proressive blog FireDogLake. “Just as Twitter and Facebook are connecting vast numbers of people who oppose an oppressive Egyptian regime, likewise the Huffington Post has informed and connected a technologically sophisticated audience who support progressive change in the United States. Notably, there is no Tea Party counterpart to the Huffington Post. The numbers don’t lie.”

Karl Frisch, the progressive strategist, suggested that, just as Drudge had inspired the Huffington Post, the Huffington Post had inspired sites with more conservative viewpoints.

“With her new perch, Arianna will be able to broaden her reach,” Frisch said.

There's much better news ::: All Hail! King of the Snow People!
