Have Smartphone, Will TimeTravel

A “time travelling woman” has appeared in the Shanghai Metro. Recently, a woman who claims to have been “sent through time” sits lengthwise at the exit to the subway station asking pedestrians for money so she can return to her home town 500 years in the past. What is even more dumbfounding is that this ancient woman even takes out and iPhone 4 to ask for mobile phone numbers from the passing crowd. Is she "real" or merely engaged in COSPLAY?

Translation of the hand-written Chinese sign on the ground:

I am from the Qingyuan village and have unwittingly time traveled here. I have nothing upon me and am begging for traveling expenses to return home, a debt I will repay in the days ahead [future].

Norway: A Firsthand Account of the Massacre in Utøya

Compiled from various sources includingSolana Larsen for Global Voices Online

The world is still in shock over the mass-murder of at least 85 people attending a political youth camp on the island Utøya in Norway on the evening of Friday, 22 July 2011. The killer, now identified as Anders Behring Breivik, masqueraded as a police officer before opening fire on everyone around him, and chasing those who fled to the water.

Killer Warns of 'More Cells'...

Breivik is also the prime suspect behind a bombing in Oslo only few hours earlier that killed seven people and caused extensive damage to government buildings.

Thoma Roche of Techyumblog posted an analysis entitled ‘Inside the Mind of the Norwegian Terrorist'. The fact that the terrorist pinpointed Japan and South Korea as clear examples of countries that consistently and directly dismissed multiculturalism has drawn various responses in South Korea

The Utøya summer camp is an annual event of AUF (Arbejdernes Ungdomsfylking) the youth organization of the Norwegian Labour Party. Young people from across the country gather to discuss politics, listen to music, play sports and hear speeches by current and former politicians. Utøya is less than an hour's drive from central Oslo. Earlier in the day, before the gunman arrived, AUF's Twitter feed [no] and the#Utøya hashtag showed that approximately 700 participants were discussing the environment, women's rights, and Middle East politics. It was raining, but the mood was good. Later, the Twitter account went silent. More...

MIA Winehouse

M.I.A. pays t.r.i.b.u.t.e. to the fallen Amy Winehouse in an unfinished demo which narrates a story of a person who committed suicide following a period of alcohol and druge abuse.

27 by _M_I_A_

A very creative song!

On her Twitter site,Twitter.com/_m_i_a_ Maya Arulpragasam quipped that '27' was an "unfinished demo" which was recorded before her 2010 mixtape 'Vickileekx'

I've always been fascinated by the "27" curse! Like fellow 27-year-olds Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, and Robert Johnson -- and Otis Redding, and Buddy Holly, and countless others who made an impact quickly, before vanishing -- Amy Winehouse's destiny will be a long tail of art remembering her.

Other celebs are jumping on the "Amy tribute wagon" - including the likes of Courtney Love and Lady Gaga.

#ssm Gay Marriage Albany Wedding Album

I was on hand for the festivities at Albany City Hall Saturday night into Sunday morning: New York is the sixth, and largest, state to legalize same-sex unions. Several other states are considering following suit.

Congrats to all of you couples! Scroll down to the bottom for my musical gift to you!
Six gay and lesbian couples from around the Capital Region were among the first in the state to legally wed under New York’s same-sex marriage law. Mayor Jerry Jennings and Judge Joseph Teresi officiated in Albany. This is what it looked outside City Hall around 11pm, an hour before things got underway...

Lights, cameras... ACTION!

When I first arrived at City Hall, I jokingly mentioned to Dori Marlin that it's been about three years since I last saw her out covering a story. "You're the third person who's told me that tonight," said she... No, she and Dan Levy weren't tying the knot... they were witnessing

Judge Teresi officiating the wedding of an African-American couple who had children with them. I wasn't able to find out who the kids were. Everyone was smiling most of the time, except during those "serious, solemn" moments! Here's the Times Union account of the evening... I mentioned in my radio report that gay rights and human rights activists hope the Empire State's same-sex marriage law will have nationwide impact - that it will impress lawmakers throughout the land, all the way to President Barack Obama. Gay marriage advocates now say they will push for Federal legislation that would require ALL states to recognize same-sex unions.

Mayor Jenning's longtime friends ("Super Secret Couple") Dale Getto and Barbara Laven were married by hizzoner. After the City Hall proceedings, they jumped in a stretch limo and headed up to Saratoga for celebration at Vapor! Congratulations, ladies!

Old chum Dan Levy from NewsChannel 13 takes a seat to jot down a few notes...

Albany City Councilman Anton Konev was on the scene to "witness history." This fellow attends more local events than Brian Scavo!

I love people! Comrades-in-arms Fox23 reporter and cameraman mugged for my smartphone as the crowd began leaving City Hall. Good job, guys!

And here's a musical gift for you Gay Couples! Ronnette's Ronnie Spector with substitute 'nettes Belinda Carlisle (Go-Gos) and Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) with the late great Clarence Clemmons on sax!

Sreyneath Poole is a young blogger who has begun documenting “inspiring Cambodian women”. Her blog project wants to dispute the traditional belief that Cambodian women belong to the kitchen. This is her story. Kounila Keo· reports for Global Voices :
On her blog Sreyneath writes: "This project was inspired after my essay on Cambodian women in politics and their discrimination in the public service. In my conclusion of the essay I wrote that Cambodian woman will continue to be discriminated against because of traditional values.

"Inspiring Cambodian Women" is set up in the hope of inspiring the world, especially Cambodian women, to stand up and make their voice be heard; to be active in their community or in the world. Even if tradition plays a huge obstacle, women can look up to women role models and be inspired to overcome the obstacles that they will face.

My hope is for the global community to become aware of incredible Cambodian women who put their time and effort to the development of their local community.

Through blogging, I hope to inspire women and youth to become an active member in their local and global community."

4 Books 4 Your Summer Reading Pleasure

Now that Harry Potter is gone, unless you're one of the "Twilight" fans, there's nothing else to read over the summer. Really? I've got some suggestions for ya...

My #1 pick for you!
A dark and defiant book, White Lotus is a great read. Written during the US Civil Rights protests of the 1960s, author John Hersey envisions Americans enslaved by the Chinese. We become the subservients. The story follows a young Arizona girl renamed White Lotus. It's the closest you'll ever get to experiencing what it must have been like to become a slave in pre Civil War America. A better experience than "The Color Purple".

Hersey was born in Tienstin, China, in 1914, spent his first 11 years there, and spent much of his early adult life as a journalist in various places in the Orient, and this experience clearly lands on and illuminates these pages. And because the Oriental culture really is different, it provides an odd 'side' look at the whole issue, giving it a whole other dimension of realization. [Various Sources]

#2
The Beautiful and Damned, first published by Scribner's in 1922, is F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel. The novel provides a portrait of the Eastern elite during the Jazz Age, exploring New York Café Society. As with his other novels, Fitzgerald's characters are complex, especially in their marriage and intimacy, much like how he treats intimacy in Tender Is the Night. The book is believed to be largely based on Fitzgerald's relationship and marriage with Zelda Fitzgerald.[1]

#3 In "The Bonesetter's Daughter," set in San Francisco and in North China, Amy Tan tells the story of Ruth Young and her mother, LuLing, in a story that reflects much of her own background. In the story, Ruth is a successful "book doctor," a ghostwriter who translates other people's thoughts into a coherent book--a skill at which she is adept. She is the "as told to" name below the author's, although the real creative effort is her own.[2]

#4 The Andromeda Strain (1969), by Michael Crichton, is a techno-thriller novel documenting the efforts of a team of scientists investigating a deadly extraterrestrial microorganism that rapidly and fatally clots human blood, while in other people inducing insanity, mostly ended in suicide or murder-suicide.

The Andromeda Strain
appeared in the The New York Times Best Seller list, establishing Michael Crichton as a genre writer. [1] For the (*yawn*) 1971 movie, see The Andromeda Strain (film). For the 2008 miniseries, see The Andromeda Strain (TV miniseries).

The Last Harry Potter Picture

This afternoon we ventured out to Colonie Center to catch the 2pm showing of the last Harry Potter movie. I love CC's theater! The seating arrangement is excellent. the digital screen is smashing. (The only horrible part was a bunch of previews OVERLY LOUD that hurt everyone's ears and likely made them NOT want to see any of the preview pix!)

As folks filed into the theater, a young husband and wife came in. They met for the first time at the first HP movie, chanced to meet again at one of the local midnight book release events (remember those?) and they married last year. They had tears in their eyes when I talked with them about what it means to be here for the last HP installment.

For parents and kids of all ages, those book releases and the series of movies no doubt made indelible memories along the clock of life. Thank you JK Rowling, wherever you are, and thanks to the creators and cast of the HP movies.

I never read a single HP book (didn't have time) but the very first HP movie, the Goblet of Fire and Prisoner of Azkeban are my three favourites. Should I ever see one of those three in book form, perhaps at a garage sale, I'll pick it up.
